House of Light and Shadow

William Duff Architects

Honorable Mention

House of Light and Shadow is a transformative reinterpretation of a Victorian-era home into a modern residence that balances heritage, innovation, and livability. Created for a design-forward family, the project preserves the original facade while reimagining the interiors for contemporary life. Clean lines, purposeful materiality, and a play on light and shadow align to honor the past while embracing the present. Inside, the layout was reconfigured around the family’s daily rhythm, with clear public and private zones. A reverse floor plan places the open living area on the upper level, flooded with natural light. Discreet infrastructure—flush lighting, recessed HVAC, and custom outlets—preserves visual clarity. Solar panels and radiant heating reduce the home’s carbon footprint. The result is a refined, adaptable, and sustainable home—rooted in history, designed for modern life.
