Inclusive Data Visualization for High Contrast Mode

This project, led by Prakruthi Suresh and Mina Yoo, originated from a real-world need encountered while developing analytics features for the Webex app. Since our product adheres to high contrast settings applied at the Windows OS level, we recognized the importance of ensuring our data visualizations are accessible in High Contrast (HC)mode. However, through this process, we uncovered a key limitation:the preset color palettes in HC themes significantly hinder the clarity and effectiveness of complex data visualizations. Our project addresses this limitation by developing practical, design-driven solutions that work within HC constraints. It encourages designers and developers to think beyond compliance and move toward truly human-centered, ethical design that works for everyone, not just the majority. This project has strong social impact because it addresses digital equity and inclusion, particularly for people with visual impairments.
