DESCRIPTION:A talk and Q&A with investor and producer Christie George about The Emergency Was Curiosity\, an illustrated book report inspired by Jenny Odell’s How to Do Nothing. Christie’s project could be categorized as useless – there was no client\, no publisher\, no commissioning editor; she did this project for no other reason than that she wanted to. \nDuring the summer of 2020\, inspired by ideas about attention in Jenny’s book\, Christie began making hand-drawn illustrations\, watercolors\, and collages as a creative response and a means to develop her own practice of attention. What began for her as a “book report” turned into a body of artwork\, an exhibition\, an event series and\, more recently\, a group project. \nThis talk will ask each of us: what is worth paying attention to? An artist and creator by nature\, she is also a world-renowned Electronic Dance Music DJ and producer. \nSarah Fathallah is a designer\, researcher\, and educator\, who specializes in applying participatory research and design in the social sector. Their work has included projects in over 25 countries with nonprofits\, governments\, and social enterprises such as the International Domestic Workers Federation and the International Rescue Committee\, on topics ranging from labor rights\, to reproductive health\, housing justice\, and foster care. This is welcome progress\, but with greater responsibility comes new challenges\, especially when it comes to championing change in organizations likely to resist it. \nAs design-driven changemakers have risen in the ranks of business\, they’ve “learned on the job\,” experiencing both setbacks and victories. We captured many of these learnings by interviewing over 40 design leaders and incorporating their shared wisdom in our book\, Changemakers: How Leaders Can Design Change in an Insanely Complex World. Whether these leaders worked at IBM and Google\, a US government agency\, or a small consulting firm\, their insights and observations are applicable to all and well-worth considering. \nThis presentation will offer an overview of what we learned. SUMMARY:Designing through a Merger or Acquisition
DESCRIPTION:As a product ecosystem expands from its first product offering to a suite of interconnected products\, the design team often scales and forms subteams within the larger design organization. With this additional organizational and product complexity\, it becomes increasingly difficult for designers to stay aligned on design best practices as well as interaction and visual design details. When design organizations reach this tipping point\, if they haven’t done so already\, they will begin to invest in a centralized design system. All good then\, right? Yes\, but\, now imagine that the already complex product suite doubles\, triples\, or even quadruples in size due to a sudden merger or acquisition. Moreover\, the acquired company brings its own perspective on design best practices and potentially their own design system. Through our panel discussion\, we’ll discuss key user experience methodologies that can help design teams who find themselves in similar situations and are unsure where to start. Panelists will cover topics such as how to align on end-to-end design processes\, how to utilize user research to establish shared baselines\, how to converge disparate design systems\, and more. By the end of this discussion\, attendees should walk away with a design-focused playbook to help them proactively deliver on the original promise of their organization’s merger or acquisition.
