SUMMARY:Robots\, AI\, and Making Courageous Futures
DESCRIPTION:IDEO has been in the emerging tech game since we designed the first commercial mouse for Apple more than 40 years ago. Since then\, we’ve designed the future of everything from kitchens to jet planes\, to entire school systems. This year\, we’re coming out of our server rooms\, turning off our CNCs and inviting you to come explore with us—and our AI agents. Come meet us and hear about what we’ve been making in this era of emerging tech. \nWe’ll share insights on the state of technology in 2024\, highlighting the trends and opportunities that excite us the most\, and showcase some of our most exciting work commercializing emerging technologies—like AI\, XR\, and robotics. But we prefer making to talking\, so we’ll invite you to experiment along with us. Expect an evening filled with compelling conversations\, hands-on activities\, and drinks and bites to fuel new ideas.

SUMMARY:Hello\, Robot: Welcoming the Age of Human-Robot Interaction
DESCRIPTION:Card79 has been at the cutting edge of design and technology since our inception\, continually pushing the boundaries with emerging technologies like neurotechnology and robotics. This year\, we’re stepping away from our CAD tools and Post-it notes to invite you to a special evening focused on Human-Robot Interactions. \nWith the fields of AI and Hardware converging\, a technology inflection point is on the horizon. This historical moment holds the potential to enable robots to take on considerably more complex tasks—from caring for aging baby boomers to dramatically simplifying manufacturing processes. But how can we ensure this technical progress will actually address our complex human needs? \nJoin us as we open our studio for the first time to explore this emerging field of human-robot interactions. We’ll share our latest insights on the intersection of design and robotics and have invited some very special friends and collaborators to give speed presentations on these topics. \nOur guest speakers include: \n\nProf. Jussi Ängeslevä\, a partner at ART+COM and an independent designer who brings over 20 years of experience in UX and emerging technologies.\nGreg Katz\, an award-winning industrial designer with over 10 years working across design firms and in-house teams at Google X\, Everyday Robots\, and Amazon Lab126.\nAfshin Mehin\, who will share Card79’s work in developing robots for clients like Neuralink\, along with the team’s futuristic projects in speculative robotics.\n\nStay tuned for more speakers to be added — we have a lot in store for attendees! \nDoors open at 6:00 PM. Don’t miss this opportunity — secure your spot and RSVP now! \n

SUMMARY:Nonfiction & Material ConneXion Open Studio
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to our studio + material library conveniently located in the heart of San Francisco. \nCome hear from hosts Phnam and Mardis Bagley (Co-Founders and Creative Directors\, Nonfiction) as they share the surprising plot twists that have happened as we’ve designed products and services – and firm – over the past seven years. \nCome watch Dr. Andrew Dent (Executive Vice President of Research\, Material ConneXion) as he shares the most recent exciting material innovations\, their impact on the way that design has evolved\, and its future impact on the way we create. Expanding on the ‘Plot Twist’ theme for this year\, Material ConneXion is bringing its own take on the unexpected\, the curveballs\, the surprising turns and sometimes unintended consequences of materials innovation in design. \nThen\, we’ll have a panel discussion on “How to apply sustainability in your design practice” featuring Mardis Bagley\, Dr. Andrew Dent\, and special guest Xander Skieller from Lime. They’ll talk about the various ways change makers\, design\, engineers and scientists can help move the sustainability needle in the right direction. \nWant more reasons to stop by? We’ll have experts from Material ConneXion giving tours of our in-house material library\, and visitors will get to network with us and like-minded folks excited about the future of everything on our rooftop deck. Light snacks and refreshments will be served. \nWe can’t wait to show you where and how we’re designing a better\, more human future. Hope to see you there! \nAbout the Panelists \nMardis Bagley is a Partner and Creative Director at Nonfiction. He’s a veteran industrial designer\, having created products and experiences that change the world for the better. His efforts have garnered numerous patents\, awards and hundreds of millions in investment capital. He has taught at the California College of the Arts in Sustainability and Social Impact and speaks internationally on the subject. \nDr. Andrew Dent\, EVP of Materials Research at Material ConneXion and Chief Material Scientist at Material Bank\, is known for his integrated approach to problem solving. One of the world’s leading authorities on materials in design\, Andrew has helped clients from start-ups and Fortune 500 companies take their products and spaces to the next level through innovative material selection and a unique cross-industry perspective. \nXander Skieller is a product development leader who is a passionate advocate and practitioner of sustainable design methods. Experience at large factories in Asia have shaped his belief that our choices as hardware designers have a tremendous impact on people and the planet\, and time in sustainable PD consulting have given him the tools to contribute to progress. Xander is currently applying this practice at Lime\, where sustainable design contributes to the company’s overall mission to reduce the carbon impact of urban transportation. \nAnd a surprise guest. \nAbout Us \nNonfiction is an award-winning design firm made of industrial designers\, architects\, engineers\, strategists\, and storytellers. We create impact-focused physical products and experiences on and off planet Earth for clients like Intel\, Anuevo\, Halo Neuroscience\, Motif Neurotech\, and more. \nMaterial ConneXion is the world’s leading material insights company with material library locations worldwide and advisory services that helps companies like Louis Vuitton and Logitech source materials that enhance the performance\, aesthetic\, and sustainability of their projects. We define the “what’s new and what’s next” in materials\, and incubate new ideas so you can make smarter design decisions. We believe every idea has a material solution.
