SUMMARY:Social Justice Design Tour: Meet the innovative architects and partners behind the new Restorative Justice Hub in SOMA
DESCRIPTION:How can we use space for healing? We invite mission-driven designers and allies to join us at Designing Justice + Designing Spaces’ recently completed restorative justice space for Community Works in SF’s SOMA district to learn about the community-engaged process and innovative partnerships that made it happen! In this volatile time when justice is under attack\,  it is more important than ever that we shine a light on stories of hope\, creativity\, and collaboration in our industry and beyond.  \nDJDS is an architecture and real estate firm harnessing the power of the built environment to end mass incarceration. After 25 years of transforming lives in the Bay Area through programs rooted in humanity and healing\, Community Works partnered with DJDS to establish its first San Francisco office—a dedicated home for critical services that support people at every stage of involvement in the justice system\, from prevention to reentry. The 6\,000-square-foot sanctuary represents a radical alternative to the criminal legal system; instead\, it provides an empowering space where individuals can thrive and feel safe. \nAt this event\, you’ll have the opportunity to see\, touch\, and experience trauma-informed design in action\, and meet the cross-sector team that made this innovative project possible\, including industry leaders such as Turner Construction. We’ll share more about how we were able to collaborate with values-aligned partners at every stage of the project\, from acoustical engineering to custom furnishings. The event will kick off with tours and a cocktail reception\, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with key partners\, including: \n\nDeanna-Van Buren\, Co-Founder and Executive Director\, Designing Justice + Designing Spaces \nAdrienne Hogg\,  Co-Executive Director\, Community Works\nChelsea Wong\, Project Manager\, Turner Construction\nEmily Pilloton-Lam\, Founder and Executive Director\, Girls Garage\nSasha Plotitsa\, Founder and CEO\, The Formr\nRashanda Udekwu\, Director of Strategic Partnerships\, Waymo (Formerly of CRI) \n\nEvent Surprise! We will unveil a limited-edition furniture piece designed by DJDS and Formr. Proceeds will benefit A New Way of Life\, a nonprofit organization that provides housing and support for formerly incarcerated women. \n  \nPhoto: Jordan Park

SUMMARY:Women in Leadership & Design (WILD) Jam: Focus Your Vision
DESCRIPTION:We are redirecting the attention of our Women in Leadership & Design (WILD) community through a vision boarding party during SF Design Week. Vision boarding is an inspiring creative tool for focusing one’s attention on a better\, more intentional future — a major part of both SFDW’s and WILD’s reasons for being. When we give our hopes\, dreams\, and wishes form — whether we put them in words by writing them down\, or make them tangible through visual design — they are more likely to become a reality. So we will gather\, with magazines and collage materials\, to bring our unique visions for creating a better world and daily life\, together.  \nWe will provide thematic creative prompts ahead of the session\, such as ‘How do you want to show up bold?’ to guide all participants in selecting powerful images to work with\, that uplift and elevate our mission and purpose. Participants are encouraged to bring their own inspirational materials\, adding a personal touch to their vision boards and enhancing the collective creativity of our WILD community. We are excited to ignite change through art and design. As this year’s ‘Attention’ theme suggests\, we seek to bring together a global and intersectional community of designers\, strategists\, artists\, and activists to focus on connections yet to be made. Learn more about WILD here. \nAgenda: \n\n3:30-3:45: Gathering and mingling\n3:45-4:00: Brief introductions and intentions.\n4:00-5:15: Vision boarding; 5 minute break moments will happen throughout the creation session to share ideas\, works in progress\, and reflections.\n5:15-5:45: Share vision boards with one another\n5:45-6:00: Wrap up & goodbyes\n\nThis WILD Jam session will be held at The Box SF\, the former ‘William Randolph Hearst Printing Plant’ and one of San Francisco’s premier event spaces. It has been generously donated by Mark E. Sackett\, Founder and Executive Creative Director at TheBoxSF.com\, Sackett Design and Reflectur.com. Learn more by following @theboxsfmercantile and @theboxsfevents on Instagram. \nExcited to support the WILD community? Click this link to donate.

SUMMARY:Changemakers\, with Maria Giudice
DESCRIPTION:CCA’s Design Division presents a talk & book signing by Maria Giudice\nBecoming a Changemaker by Leading with Design \nDesign leaders have evolved from being responsible for executing design concepts to having a crucial role in driving change across organizations. This is welcome progress\, but with greater responsibility comes new challenges\, especially when it comes to championing change in organizations likely to resist it. \nAs design-driven changemakers have risen in the ranks of business\, they’ve “learned on the job\,” experiencing both setbacks and victories. We captured many of these learnings by interviewing over 40 design leaders and incorporating their shared wisdom in our book\, Changemakers: How Leaders Can Design Change in an Insanely Complex World. Whether these leaders worked at IBM and Google\, a US government agency\, or a small consulting firm\, their insights and observations are applicable to all and well-worth considering. \nThis presentation will offer an overview of what we learned. It will cover Top 5 mistakes changemakers make as they navigate the messy processes and people issues involved in driving any type of change. You’ll learn how to determine the ground conditions needed for success\, how to find and align supporters\, how to minimize detractors\, and how to repurpose design tools\, frameworks\, and techniques to your advantage. \nBio:\nFor three decades\, creative teams and business leaders have sought the provocative vision and mentorship of Maria Giudice. After founding the pioneering experience design firm Hot Studio and leading global teams at Facebook and Autodesk\, Maria’s mission today is to build the next generation of creative leaders. Through one-on-one coaching\, group coaching\, and team-building workshops\, Maria unlocks the potential hidden in executives and the people they lead. A popular speaker at design and business conferences\, Maria is also the author of four design books\, including Rise of the DEO: Leadership by Design\, and most recently Changemakers: How Leaders Can Design Change in an Insanely Complex World.
