SUMMARY:Changemakers\, with Maria Giudice
DESCRIPTION:CCA’s Design Division presents a talk & book signing by Maria Giudice\nBecoming a Changemaker by Leading with Design \nDesign leaders have evolved from being responsible for executing design concepts to having a crucial role in driving change across organizations. This is welcome progress\, but with greater responsibility comes new challenges\, especially when it comes to championing change in organizations likely to resist it. \nAs design-driven changemakers have risen in the ranks of business\, they’ve “learned on the job\,” experiencing both setbacks and victories. We captured many of these learnings by interviewing over 40 design leaders and incorporating their shared wisdom in our book\, Changemakers: How Leaders Can Design Change in an Insanely Complex World. Whether these leaders worked at IBM and Google\, a US government agency\, or a small consulting firm\, their insights and observations are applicable to all and well-worth considering. \nThis presentation will offer an overview of what we learned. It will cover Top 5 mistakes changemakers make as they navigate the messy processes and people issues involved in driving any type of change. You’ll learn how to determine the ground conditions needed for success\, how to find and align supporters\, how to minimize detractors\, and how to repurpose design tools\, frameworks\, and techniques to your advantage. \nBio:\nFor three decades\, creative teams and business leaders have sought the provocative vision and mentorship of Maria Giudice. After founding the pioneering experience design firm Hot Studio and leading global teams at Facebook and Autodesk\, Maria’s mission today is to build the next generation of creative leaders. Through one-on-one coaching\, group coaching\, and team-building workshops\, Maria unlocks the potential hidden in executives and the people they lead. A popular speaker at design and business conferences\, Maria is also the author of four design books\, including Rise of the DEO: Leadership by Design\, and most recently Changemakers: How Leaders Can Design Change in an Insanely Complex World.

SUMMARY:Risky Business: Climate Change\, Design\, and Avoiding Unforeseen Consequences
DESCRIPTION:Risky Business: Climate Change\, Design\, and Avoiding Unforeseen Consequences \nThroughout human history\, new tools and technologies have simultaneously moved us forward as a society and set us back with unforeseen consequences. Here in the Bay Area\, there is a common desire to disrupt\, move fast\, and break things\, but that approach is not valid for the climate crisis. \nWe as designers must learn to recognize the possible unintended consequences of our work. Join us as we consider the near-term and long-term effects of our work as designers\, innovators\, and problem solvers at our next Climate Designers Bay Area event — Risky Business: Climate Change\, Design\, and Avoiding Unforeseen Consequences. \nThe evening’s conversations will highlight helpful perspectives and practices for considering the potential impact of the work we do as designers as we collectively address the climate emergency. \nAfter the speakers\, attendees are invited to participate in a mock “premotem” exercise where they will learn techniques for assessing project risk. This activity is optional\, and we’ll also have an opportunity for socialization. \nSpeakers: \nMike Monteiro \nMike is cofounder and design director of Mule Design\, an interactive design studio whose work has been called “delightfully hostile” by The New Yorker. He’s written four books: Design Is a Job\, You’re My Favorite Client\, Ruined by Design\, and The Collected Angers. He’s not as smart as his wife\, or as charming as his dog. He’s pretty much given up on tech and is considering a future as a lighthouse keeper or record store owner\, or maybe opening a record store in a lighthouse. \nKelly Neuner\nKelly (they/them) is a transdisciplinary designer who is passionate about exploring the intersections of people\, systems\, and technology. Their background includes work with companies ranging from nonprofits and startups to Fortune 500 companies in healthcare\, technology\, education\, fintech\, and retail\, both in consulting and in-house at Fast Company. They center their design and futures practice around responsible design and participatory practices. They have completed dedicated training in equity-centered design and research and responsible tech development with organizations including Creative Reaction Lab\, HmntyCntrd\, and Gray Area. Kelly is currently the Global Chapter & Community Lead for the Design Futures Initiative and is a City Lead for SheFi. Kelly graduated from The New School & Parsons with a focus in Design Management\, which combined design\, business\, marketing\, and psychology. \nJulia Solano \nJulia is a designer\, artist\, and bamboo architect. She’s Community Architect for The Tech We Want\, an initiative focused on supporting a new wave of leaders\, companies\, and technologies built on inclusivity\, mutualism\, sustainability\, and responsible innovation. She’s spent much of the past decade co-founding and designing in AI companies\, building bamboo and earth structures for communing\, and exploring the complexity of community by living in experimental cities\, artist cooperatives\, and cults in efforts to better understand and build social\, digital\, and physical infrastructure to bridge to more hopeful futures. \nAgenda: \n6:00: Doors Open & Networking \n6:15: Speakers & Q&A \n7:30: Social Time & Pre-mortem Exercise \n8:00: Event Ends

SUMMARY:Jam Session by frog Design: Co-Creating a Code of Ethics in AI & Other Rising Technologies
DESCRIPTION:During this 90-minute session\, we want to bring creatives\, technologists and forward-thinkers together to co-create a code of ethics around the increasingly ubiquitous\, and intelligent technologies that are making their way into our day to day worlds. \nAt this pivotal moment\, the rise of ChatGPT and other AI-powered products and services have illuminated countless questions about how\, when\, and why we should use these rising technologies. We are at a critical inflection point in design and technology—What are the ethical codes that will foster our relationship with AI technology? Who gets to write them? What’s at stake here in this plot twist with humans and technology? \nAs designers and creatives\, we are increasingly at the forefront of making decisions about technology use in the products and services that we help create. For this event\, we will identify tactical actions that we can take and craft principles that can help us establish a north star for designing with rising tech. \nThis event is brought to you by frog’s Service Design team\, and will take a service-centered approach to this co-creation session. We are excited to share more about our team\, methodologies as we co-create with all of you.

SUMMARY:Potato - Open Studio
DESCRIPTION:Join us POTATO for a talk and mingle to celebrate SFDW 2023!\nChange is an inevitable part of life\, plot twists as some call it — and it’s especially true in the world of product development and design. Whether it’s new technologies\, shifting customer needs\, or evolving market trends\, change is constantly reshaping the landscape of the product. To thrive in this environment\, companies need to embrace change and build a culture of product discovery.\nIn this talk\, we will explore how companies can use product discovery to embrace change and create successful products that meet the needs of customers. SUMMARY:Designing for Climate
DESCRIPTION:Know what would be the ultimate plot twist? If enterprises across the globe went from key contributors to climate change\, to critical drivers in halting the climate crisis. That’s our goal at Watershed – to create software that empowers companies to cut their carbon emissions. \nThe Watershed design team is thrilled to host a discussion on what it’s like designing for climate – how to go deep on a complex domain\, how to design for a space without much prior art\, and what it’s like balancing immediate customer needs alongside an urgent global mission. \nWe certainly don’t have the answers – in this session\, you can expect a brief intro and case study from our team (and/or other experts in the field!)\, but then we’ll invite you to share your perspective…whether you’re deep in climate tech too\, or from an analogously complex space.

SUMMARY:Designing through a Merger or Acquisition
DESCRIPTION:As a product ecosystem expands from its first product offering to a suite of interconnected products\, the design team often scales and forms subteams within the larger design organization. With this additional organizational and product complexity\, it becomes increasingly difficult for designers to stay aligned on design best practices as well as interaction and visual design details. When design organizations reach this tipping point\, if they haven’t done so already\, they will begin to invest in a centralized design system. All good then\, right? Yes\, but\, now imagine that the already complex product suite doubles\, triples\, or even quadruples in size due to a sudden merger or acquisition. Moreover\, the acquired company brings its own perspective on design best practices and potentially their own design system. Through our panel discussion\, we’ll discuss key user experience methodologies that can help design teams who find themselves in similar situations and are unsure where to start. Panelists will cover topics such as how to align on end-to-end design processes\, how to utilize user research to establish shared baselines\, how to converge disparate design systems\, and more. By the end of this discussion\, attendees should walk away with a design-focused playbook to help them proactively deliver on the original promise of their organization’s merger or acquisition. (Note: for the first 30 minutes or so we’ll have light snacks and beverages so come on time if you’d like to mingle with the other attendees!) \n*Registration for this event will close on June 4th 2:00 pm PDT due to building security logistics.

SUMMARY:IBM Design presents… SF’s Best “Worst Design” Challenge
DESCRIPTION:As designers\, we strive to create products\, experiences\, visual\, and other solutions that are useful\, usable\, and desirable for the intended audiences. This requires a deep knowledge of user pain points\, needs\, and desires…but what would happen if we use that knowledge to deliver users to their destination in the most frustrating way possible? \nIn this fun\, light-hearted design jam\, participants will compete to design uniquely un-user-friendly solutions for a given prompt. While it may sound simple\, designing the these terrible processes could be deceptively difficult. Participants will follow the classic design process\, but look instead for “holes of opportunity” to create\, exacerbate\, and twist problems instead of solutions. \nThis design jam is “the mental equivalent of standing on your head”—it allows us as designers to take what we do for our day job and see design from a fun\, new perspective. Let’s have fun\, thinking creatively\, and change the way the story unfolds by viewing the design process in a new way. \nWhat’s in it for participants? \nOther than an opportunity to take part in a fun design jam\, there will be food\, swag giveaways\, and networking opportunities. \nEvent schedule \nFirst 20 min – arrival\, meet & greet\, networking\n20 min – brief presentation\, explanation of challenge goals\, instructions\, and expectations; design challenge prompt announced\n60 min – participants work on challenge within their teams\n20 min – share and tell: teams present their designs\n30 min – winners announced\, closing statements\, and enjoy refreshments

SUMMARY:Wiki Art Jam
DESCRIPTION:What does it take to be “The Last Best Place on the Internet”? While billions of people read Wikipedia every day\, most are unaware of or do not understand the massive collaboration happening behind the scenes\, involving people and machines. This collaboration is what allows Wikipedia to remain free and open source. Our vision is to host a participatory art installation in the streets of San Francisco\, where a large canvas will be set up for participants to collaboratively create an art piece. Participants will be allowed to choose roles that mimic volunteer roles on Wikipedia\, and will be given constraints based on their role. The piece’s creative direction will be guided by a local San Francisco artist. We will livestream the art-making process and add a digital layer to the recording that comments on the state of privacy on Wikipedia.

SUMMARY:Onur Yüce Gun: The In-Between is the Best Place to be at (AI\, Computational Design\, Digital Manufacturing)
DESCRIPTION:The In-Between is the Best Place to be at\nOnur Yuce Gun\, Ph.D. \nThe forthcoming lecture at San Francisco Design Week 2023\, titled “The in-between is the best place to be at\,” promises to offer an insightful exploration of the future of design from a human-centered digital computation perspective. This event is sponsored by New Balance. \nAligned with the event’s theme\, ‘Plot Twist\,’ this lecture will emphasize the importance of embracing change and the unexpected\, rather than clinging to stability and trends\, as a fundamental aspect of design thinking and existence. \nJust as the city of San Francisco thrives on the twists and turns that drive innovation and progress\, so too does computational design. Similarly\, “plot twists” that have disrupted industries and economies will be explored as crucial moments that have enriched Onur’s unique design career trajectory. Whether planned or unplanned\, these changes will be presented as opportunities to spark creativity and shape the future. \nThis lecture will uniquely portray Computational Design by drawing on experiences and accomplished projects\, ranging from half-a-mile tall skyscrapers to limited production 3D-printed shoes. It will weave a narrative of how these elements intertwine with the human experience and the concept of getting lost. \nThe discussion will span a variety of topics\, including complete value chains\, human-centered innovative thinking\, hobbyist teaching\, servant leadership\, ontology\, and references to Dante’s Divine Comedy. The lecture aims to provide a fresh perspective on navigating the “plot twists” of our rapidly evolving world\, by being persistent on residing in the in-between\, and stimulate engaging conversations on this captivating topic. \n  \nBIO \nOnur Yüce Gün is a seasoned computational design leader\, researcher\, and instructor. SUMMARY:De.Coded. Creating a Human Atlas of Silicon Valley with Studio Sutherl&
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk by Jim Sutherland of Studio Sutherl& in the UK. \nHuman Atlas is a social-impact art platform founded by artist Marcus Lyon. Mapping community through oral history\, portraits and ancestral DNA. Inspiring the next generation of change. \nHuman Atlas projects are research-based\, interdisciplinary explorations of the people of a specified geography. They are built on extensive nomination processes. A carefully curated group nominates individuals who are championing and driving social impact in all its forms: from public servants to entrepreneurs\, from non-profit leaders and activists to artists and scientists. The projects then map these remarkable humans through photographic portraits\, app-based oral histories\, info-graphic mapping and ancestral DNA. Human Atlas projects take on many digital forms but always begin as a published limited edition book and an interactive exhibition. \nStudio Sutherl& has designed a Human Atlas of Brazil\, Germany\, Detroit and now Silicon Valley and are currently working in Los Angeles. \nABOUT Studio Sutherl& and Jim Sutherland: \nStudio Sutherl& was set in London up by Jim Sutherland in 2014 to be agile and playful – building teams from the best artists\, architects\, photographers\, writers and strategists to suit each project. There is immense creative potential in collaboration. And great joy. \nHe has rebranded the Natural History Museum\, Wimbledon Lawn Tennis\, The Arts Society\, Williams F1\, Prostate Cancer UK\, National Museums Scotland\, Welsh National Opera\, and Start-rite shoes. He has designed over 50 stamps to date for Royal Mail including the Agatha Christie set in 2016. Awards include 96 pencils at D&AD. He has judged D&AD nine times (including Foreman of the Branding Jury in 2023). \nStudio Sutherl& was the most awarded design studio at D&AD in 2017\, and came number one in the Computer Arts UK studio rankings in 2017 and 2018.

SUMMARY:HCI: Human Connection Interaction
DESCRIPTION:Leave your titles at the door\, and arrive with curiosity in your heart. This gathering is a chance to get to know each other for who you really are without your job title\, achievements\, accomplishments\, or other markers of status and success. First names only. No job titles or company names. For one hour\, you’ll step into an altered reality where you’ll learn about others and allow yourself to be known not for “what you do” but for who you are — as humans who have triumphed over the twists and turns of your life. You will be immersed in others’ stories\, and you’ll bless them by sharing your own. This guided conversation is an experience of uncommon authenticity and you might discover that this co-created experiment is your favorite interaction of the week. If you crave openness\, intimacy\, kindness\, and you have a willingness to try new things\, then this is absolutely for you.
