SUMMARY:Women in Leadership & Design (WILD) Jam: Focus Your Vision
DESCRIPTION:We are redirecting the attention of our Women in Leadership & Design (WILD) community through a vision boarding party during SF Design Week. Vision boarding is an inspiring creative tool for focusing one’s attention on a better\, more intentional future — a major part of both SFDW’s and WILD’s reasons for being. When we give our hopes\, dreams\, and wishes form — whether we put them in words by writing them down\, or make them tangible through visual design — they are more likely to become a reality. So we will gather\, with magazines and collage materials\, to bring our unique visions for creating a better world and daily life\, together.  \nWe will provide thematic creative prompts ahead of the session\, such as ‘How do you want to show up bold?’ to guide all participants in selecting powerful images to work with\, that uplift and elevate our mission and purpose. Participants are encouraged to bring their own inspirational materials\, adding a personal touch to their vision boards and enhancing the collective creativity of our WILD community. We are excited to ignite change through art and design. As this year’s ‘Attention’ theme suggests\, we seek to bring together a global and intersectional community of designers\, strategists\, artists\, and activists to focus on connections yet to be made. Learn more about WILD here. \nAgenda: \n\n3:30-3:45: Gathering and mingling\n3:45-4:00: Brief introductions and intentions.\n4:00-5:15: Vision boarding; 5 minute break moments will happen throughout the creation session to share ideas\, works in progress\, and reflections.\n5:15-5:45: Share vision boards with one another\n5:45-6:00: Wrap up & goodbyes\n\nThis WILD Jam session will be held at The Box SF\, the former ‘William Randolph Hearst Printing Plant’ and one of San Francisco’s premier event spaces. It has been generously donated by Mark E. Sackett\, Founder and Executive Creative Director at TheBoxSF.com\, Sackett Design and Reflectur.com. Learn more by following @theboxsfmercantile and @theboxsfevents on Instagram. \nExcited to support the WILD community? Click this link to donate.

SUMMARY:Chronos vs. Kairos: The Battle for Attention
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive discussion and exploration of time. How do we experience it? Are we using it wisely? The technological advancements of the digital age enable us to keep our calendars full and our lives productive as ever\, but at what cost? \n\nThe ancient Greeks had two concepts of time. Chronos is quantitative time\, measured in years\, months\, weeks\, days\, hours\, minutes\, seconds. Kairos\, is qualitative time or also known as “Deep Time”\, an experience where our perception of Chronos stops or disappears\, and we’re able to be truly present. \nThis event will invite you to examine and explore how these two concepts play out\, and consider how we may cultivate greater mindfulness and deeper experiences in our daily lives and design practices. \nBrought to you by:\nPact Studio – Creating meaningful\, unmistakable brands.\nExistential Co. – Storyteller exploring life\, death\, and meaning.\nDavid Bill – Service Designer and UX’er interested in history\, systems thinking\, human behavior\, and the role of technology.

SUMMARY:The Future is Physital - Designs that Bridge the Physical and Digital World\, Enabled by XR\, AI and other Emerging Tech
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, designer and artist Xiaobi Iris Pan (https://irispan.net/) will share design trends made possible with the latest AI and XR technologies. Iris believes the future of design should poetically bridge the digital world with the physical\, to create a world where bits and atoms are interwoven\, where technology is used to connect rather than isolate\, inspire rather than distract\, nourish rather than exhaust people. \nThe lecture will feature 3 of Iris’ independent design works\, including\n1) Love Cassette\, the first-of-its-kind sound interactive installation that can turn one’s love message into a postcard on the spot\, to date\, Love Cassette has been visited by over 1 million participants around the world.\n2)Heat Chair\, an innovative computational design and fabrication system that can turn human ergonomics data into the robotic heating path\, to manufacture a chair that is completely responsive to human ergonomics.\n3) a series of XR interactive projects that break the boundary between the digital and physical world. \nThe audience will learn from the lecture: \n1) The future is physical. From an experience level\, Iris is advocating for hybrid and holistic experience design where the experience itself involves multiple senses and bridges the digital world with the physical.\n2) From a human level\, our products and experiences need to be personalizable\, anticipatory\, and adaptable to human needs and various human states. And luckily\, now these designs are made possible with advanced AI technology.\n3) From an environment and system level\, the future of design needs to be programmable. (Material\, Algorithm\, Fabrication. etc.) \nThese trends are also made possible because of the most recent advanced manufacturing techniques (e.g. nano-scale 3D printing\, bio-programmable material\, etc.)

SUMMARY:Mahjong: The Intersections of Tradition\, Community\, and Craft
DESCRIPTION:EXiT at Catharine Clark Gallery\, FYRN\, and Sharon Zheng cordially invite you to an afternoon centered around learning mahjong\, a Chinese game played by four people. The event\, hosted by EXiT\, will take place in Catharine Clark Gallery’s main exhibition space during the run of In Real Life by Michael Hall and Salty Rainbow by Imin Yeh. \nImin Yeh is an interdisciplinary artist specializing in sculpture\, installation\, and participatory events. Her projects use print media both as a technical tool for realizing large-scale works and as a conceptual strategy for exploring free exchange and craft-based economies. Among Yeh’s diverse and ongoing projects\, this event will highlight her project Paper Mahjong\, of which kits can be purchased to build at home. This project encourages contemplation of the unseen labor behind cultural souvenirs\, while also delving into how games and craft nurture community\, collaboration\, and companionship. \nIn addition to Paper Mahjong\, mahjong game sets will be available for attendees to play. Local artist and creative Sharon Zheng will be present with her handmade How to Play Mahjong zines\, providing insights and instruction in playing the traditional game. In conversation with Salty Rainbow is In Real Life\, a show of trompe-l’œil artworks by Michael Hall that bridge painting\, sculpture\, and shelving. Both artists’ work engages with the domestic\, parenting\, and the ordinary details of family and community life through highly crafted artworks that draw upon historical artmaking techniques. Seating for game-play will be provided by FYRN\, renowned for its marriage of traditional woodworking techniques with modern manufacturing to produce elegant essential furniture pieces that advance the tradition of American furniture-making.

SUMMARY:Rafi Ajl at The Future Perfect Exhibition and Art Opening
DESCRIPTION:Experience the work of Rafi Ajl at The Future Perfect (3085 Sacramento Street)\, beginning June 7.  Ajl is a Berkeley\, California-based artist who is obsessed with form and process. He is driven by the possibilities of materiality\, an insatiable curiosity\, and an undisputed reverence for the pressures of the creative process. At The Future Perfect’s Pacific Height’s gallery\, see a range of his works\, including furniture\, glass works\, and more. \nSchedule: \n\nExhibition Gallery Open 10am-6pm\, stop by any time to see the exhibit Monday-Friday.\nOpening Celebration Event 6pm-8pm\n\nThe Future perfect will be serving Las Jaras wine for  the opening celebration. \nThis event celebrates the exhibition opening; however\, attendees are also encouraged to visit the Gallery\, open from 10 am – 6pm\,  Monday through Friday. \nRafi Ajl (b.1983) is a Berkeley\, California-based artist who is obsessed with form and process. He is driven by the possibilities of materiality\, an insatiable curiosity\, and an undisputed reverence for the pressures of the creative process. \nAjl’s approach is also deeply rooted in post-structuralist critical theory\, which emphasizes that the process is never terminal but boundless and full of play. \nAjl studied literature and critical theory at Hampshire College\, where he gained a foundation in post-structuralist critical theory\, the Situationists\, a prominent group of European intellectuals and avant-garde artists\, and the German philosopher Walter Benjamin. \nBorn and raised in Brooklyn\, New York\, Ajl grew up in a deeply artistic home where making things was a way of life. He can scarcely recall a time when he wasn’t building and taking things apart\, and cites his quilter mother\, who taught him how to sew and about color\, as an early influence. His house was an assemblage of folk art\, antique furniture\, and quilts\, where brightly colored walls contrasted with parquet floors and neo-Victorian details. In 2012\, Ajl graduated from the California College of the Arts with an MFA in Design.
