DESCRIPTION:Join UC Berkeley Master of Design (MDes) faculty member Pierluigi Dalla Rosa and visionary architect Dr. Eugene Tssui for a conversation on how designers (and humanity at large) can chart new paths forward through evolutionary thinking. \nDr. Tssui harnesses the ingenuity of the natural world in his multidisciplinary practice that spans architecture\, fashion design\, hand-painted renderings\, and music. His work offers bold alternatives to technological sameness\, creative specialization\, and cultural homogenization.  \nPierluigi Dalla Rosa brings a complementary perspective shaped by his work designing novel interfaces and his teaching at Berkeley MDes\, where he encourages students to treat technology not as a given\, but as a material to question\, shape\, and reimagine. \nTogether\, Dalla Rosa and Tssui will examine how the rapid proliferation of emerging technologies is influencing creative practice and planetary well-being\, and what it might look like to resist that tide. \nThe evening will feature an exclusive premiere of footage from Tssui’s forthcoming documentary\, followed by a reception with refreshments and an interactive exhibition of student work from the Berkeley MDes program. \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \nPierluigi Dalla Rosa is an artist\, designer\, leader\, inventor\, and educator with a passion for the medium of computation. With extensive experience in both in-house and consulting roles\, he has helped to build and ship forward-looking products for large companies and startups\, such as Apple\, NIO\, Panasonic\, and Humane. His commitment to crafting experiences and artifacts that elevate human intellect and unleash creative potential is the cornerstone of his professional ethos. He actively explores the space at the intersection of sustainability and computing and other areas of interest include collective and spatial computing outside of traditional devices. Pierluigi is faculty at the Berkeley Master of Design (MDes) program\, where he inspires students to envision new narratives about a future with sustainable practices in technology. He holds a master’s degree in Cinema and Media Engineering from Politecnico di Torino and he is an alumnus of the interaction design program at the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design.\n\nDr. Eugene Tssui is an architect\, educator\, athlete\, and visionary with a commitment to ecological design principles since 1990. With experience working alongside revolutionary architects Bruce Goff and Dr. Frei Otto in the 1980s\, he has designed sustainable buildings and planned cities for indigenous communities in Shenzhen\, China from 1999-2015. His dedication to creating structures that harmonize with nature earned him the title “Guardian Angel of the Planet” in 2013\, alongside Jane Goodall and Jean Michel Cousteau. He actively explores the intersection of architecture and environmentalism\, with his work to be featured at the New York Museum of Modern Art in 2023-2024. Eugene has taught at UC Berkeley\, Ohio University\, and universities throughout China\, inspiring students to embrace ecological approaches to architecture. He holds an Interdisciplinary Doctorate from UC Berkeley (1990) and is an alumnus of Columbia University\, having been part of E. Paul Torrance’s creativity development program in the 1960s. \nABOUT BERKELEY MDES \nThe UC Berkeley Master of Design (MDes) is a professional graduate program in design for emerging technologies. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Ovata  \n  \nWhat if a wall could carry memory\, scent\, and greenery—all at once? \n  \nInspired by the traditional Korean  병풍 Byung-poong (folding screen) \, Ovata presents a site-flexible installation: a  portable living wall  composed of hinged\, frame-based panels filled with  California native plants. Spread throughout the event venue\, these sculptural pieces are more than dividers—they are  multi-sensory green moments  that offer a breath of nature\, evoke regional nostalgia\, and serve as quiet visual anchors within the event energy. \n  \nEach panel transforms the space with  natural scents\, living textures \, and a subtle reference to the cultural practice of honoring people and place. Think of it as a  living scroll of memory and nature —brought into the present. \n  \nRather than serving as a static backdrop\, this installation  gently guides the flow of people \, encouraging organic circulation while shaping cozy niches for gathering\, pausing\, and connecting. Like a breeze through a forest\, its layout invites movement and mingling while offering soft\, intimate pockets of calm \n  \n Schedule:    \nNo fixed schedule. What does it take to build creative ecosystems\, and what conditions allow those ecosystems to blossom? \nThrough the lens of four individuals working across art\, design\, education and community-building\, we’ll explore how their creative practices contribute to our experience of connection and culture. \n\nKatherine Lam is an independent designer/builder and Program Lead for the Furniture Program at California College of the Arts.  Kathy’s practice spans nearly 3 decades of engagement with furniture and the handmade object and has recently expanded into the intersections of craft + community practice.\nEvan Kinori is a garment designer and patternmaker with a shop and studio space in San Francisco’s Mission District\, showcasing clothing\, furniture and objects. His simple collection of garments is made of the highest quality artisan fabrics from around the world\, constructed with meticulous attention to detail.\nYvonne Mouser is an Oakland based artist\, designer\, and maker whose work exists between the practical and conceptual\, spanning furniture\, objects\, experiences\, and sculpture. His roots trace back to Phu Quoc\, Vietnam\, where his family has crafted artisanal fish sauce since 1895. \nChef Phu’s culinary expertise is a testament to his diverse experiences. He honed his skills in the hallowed kitchens of renowned establishments\, ranging from New York’s internationally acclaimed Daniel to San Francisco’s prestigious 2-star Michelin restaurant\, Acquerello. Throughout his career\, he absorbed the essence of various culinary traditions\, from American culinary excellence to classical European techniques. Yet\, a profound connection to what he calls “the memory of taste” led him back to his Vietnamese roots. \nEmbarking on a culinary exploration of his mother’s treasured recipes\, Chef Tu revisited cherished childhood dishes and embarked on pilgrimages to Vietnam for inspiration. DESCRIPTION:One Hat One Hand\, and newly acquired DEKA Fabrication\, would like to host a Design Week Open House that gives architects\, designers\, brand teams\, and creative partners a rare\, behind-the-scenes look at how complex ideas become real\, buildable work. This is a chance to connect the design community directly with the people and processes that make ambitious projects possible\, from early collaboration and prototyping through fabrication and finishing. By opening our doors\, we’re inviting guests to see what “integrated” really looks like when metal\, wood\, lighting\, and art are coordinated as one cohesive build\, with fewer handoffs and better outcomes. \nGuests will tour the shop\, meet our designers\, metalworkers\, woodworkers\, and project leads\, and see examples of public art fabrication\, integrated lighting projects\, architectural features\, and custom elements built for environments that need to perform and impress. We’ll share materials\, techniques\, and in progress work so visitors can understand how decisions around tolerances\, finishes\, durability\, and installation realities get handled early\, without compromising the creative vision. We’ll wrap the evening with time to mingle and talk projects\, with beverages and food served.
