SUMMARY:Build Less\, Solve More: Where Accurate Data Informs Efficient Design
DESCRIPTION:In a world of over-designed solutions\, what if the best answer is to do less\, and do it smarter?  \nHosted by MKThink\, a pioneer in innovative spatial design for over 25 years\, this talk\, and interactive workshop explores the power of accurate as a lever for design impact.  \nRooted in the firm’s Build Less\, Solve More (BLSM) philosophy\, the session examines how data\, cultural context\, and environmental intelligence can drive decisions that reduce physical footprint while increasing value across social\, environmental\, and financial dimensions.  \nAttendees will hear from MKThink’s design and spatial intelligence leaders as they share recent\, local case studies:  \n\nHow Stanford Law School identified the equivalent of 81\,000 sq ft of new classroom space\, without building\, through utilization modeling and environmental benchmarking. \nHow LBNL’s Efficient & Healthy Schools Campaign achieved up to 30.7% energy reduction and 48.5% air quality improvement with targeted retrofits\, not renovations. \n\nParticipants will then roll up their sleeves in a collaborative workshop. The challenge? Reframe a spatial problem through the lens of build less\, solve more. With guidance from MKThink’s structured spatial analytics model and CARD standards (Clarity\, Accuracy\, Relevance\, Defensibility)\, teams will shift from “What should we add?” to “What can we solve by building less?”  \nEvent Agenda:\n\nWelcoming and Networking: 4:30 to 4:50\nMKThink Team’s Presentation: 4:50 to 5:15\nHands-on Workshop: 5:15 to 6:00\nClosing and Networking: 6:00 to 6:30\n\nThis session is for designers\, architects\, planners\, strategists\, and systems thinkers looking to increase their impact\, while reducing their footprint. It offers real tools and real metrics\, guided by the idea that just enough is a feast.

SUMMARY:When UX Meets ML/AI: Human-Centered Design in an Algorithmic World\, How UC Berkeley Extension is embracing AI and Tech
DESCRIPTION:Explore the intersection of UX design and AI/ML—how designers can and should shape the user experience around intelligent systems\, focusing on usability\, transparency\, trust\, and human agency.  \nIn an era where artificial intelligence is embedded in everything from search engines to smart assistants\, the role of user experience (UX) design is being radically redefined. This talk delves into the intersection of AI and UX\, examining how designers can create intuitive\, ethical\, and empowering digital experiences that work in harmony with machine intelligence. \nWe’ll discuss how designing for AI-driven systems is fundamentally different from traditional UX. AI systems are adaptive\, probabilistic\, and often opaque\, meaning users don’t always understand how decisions are made. This introduces new design challenges\, such as building trust\, ensuring transparency\, and providing effective feedback mechanisms. \nWe’ll explore: \n\nHow to apply UX principles like explainability and control in AI contexts\nCommon pitfalls and challenges\, such as data bias and over-automation\nDesign patterns that help users feel confident using AI\nReal-world case studies in productivity tools\, entertainment\, and high-stakes industries like healthcare and finance\n\nThe talk will conclude by looking ahead\, highlighting the emerging roles of UX designers in shaping the future of AI. As tools evolve and AI becomes a design collaborator\, UX professionals will need to learn new skills\, such as prompt engineering and behavior modeling. \nWhether you’re a designer\, product manager\, or tech enthusiast\, this talk will give you practical insights and inspiration to create human-centered AI experiences.\n \nHow UC Berkeley Extension is Embracing AI and Emerging Technology Courses\nUC Berkeley Extension is adapting its curriculum to meet the growing demand for AI and emerging tech skills by offering courses in areas such as machine learning\, data ethics\, and human-centered AI and Voice Design. SUMMARY:The Scent of Nostalgia: A Living Green Wall Within Reach
DESCRIPTION:The Scent of Nostalgia: A Living Wall Within Reach    \n Presented by Ovata \n  \n Description:    \nWhat if a wall could carry memory\, scent\, and greenery—all at once? \n  \nInspired by the traditional Korean  병풍 Byung-poong (folding screen) \, Ovata presents a site-flexible installation: a  portable living wall  composed of hinged\, frame-based panels filled with  California native plants. Spread throughout the event venue\, these sculptural pieces are more than dividers—they are  multi-sensory green moments  that offer a breath of nature\, evoke regional nostalgia\, and serve as quiet visual anchors within the event energy. \n  \nEach panel transforms the space with  natural scents\, living textures \, and a subtle reference to the cultural practice of honoring people and place. Think of it as a  living scroll of memory and nature —brought into the present. \n  \nRather than serving as a static backdrop\, this installation  gently guides the flow of people \, encouraging organic circulation while shaping cozy niches for gathering\, pausing\, and connecting. Like a breeze through a forest\, its layout invites movement and mingling while offering soft\, intimate pockets of calm \n  \n Schedule:    \nNo fixed schedule. The green wall installation is designed to be  explored freely throughout the venue  during the event. \nThis is a  self-guided\, standalone installation —no formal presentation. \n  \n Bonus Features:    \n– Portable green wall panels placed throughout the venue \n–  Designed with California native species    \n–  QR codes on each panel  to explore featured plants and their ecological stories \n– Subtle  natural fragrance  in the air \n– Visual and spatial  flexibility  to frame or divide areas \n– Inspired by  병풍(Byung-poong) \, traditional Korean folding screens

SUMMARY:From Bloom to Decay: A Floral Installation
DESCRIPTION:“Foraged art is making art with what you find and finding art in what you see.” Bloom and Decay transforms an industrial space into a lush\, immersive garden using floral sculptures crafted from botanicals and found materials. Inspired by Flower House Mexico\, this project brings together San Francisco-based floral designers & multi-media artists to reimagine space\, the natural world\, and community. Embracing the ephemeral nature of plants\, the work celebrates the full lifecycle of botanical material—from bloom to decay—encouraging a deeper appreciation for the fleeting yet powerful presence of nature in our everyday lives.  \nLeslie Jonath is curator\, book packager and event producer. She works with floral designers to create books and events including Floret Flower Farm\, Ariella Chezar\, and artist Mary Jo Hoffman. She was a featured artist with Peter Cole for San Francisco Park Alliance Heart Your Parks Day in which she co-created a 50-foot heart using reclaimed wood and rose petals for Earth Day in 2021. She is the co-author of Foraged Art: Creating Projects Using Blooms\, Branches and Elements in Nature published by Blue Sky . \n  \nMadge McCulloch is an Oakland-based stylist\, event producer and chef working at the intersection of food and art. DESCRIPTION:“Brilliant Creativity Lasting a Lifetime”  \n33SIXTY Founder GREGORY HERMAN invites you to discover the works of innovators BRETT WOODS and JOSEPH DANGARAN\, principals of AD100 architecture and design firm Woods + Dangaran\, through a lively conversation with GREGORY HERMAN.  \nThe architects will discuss designing in the spirit of California’s great builders. Learn how Woods + Dangaran’s midcentury restorations and bespoke modern homes share FLEXFORM’s vision of history\, innovation\, and creativity. FLEXFORM’s exquisite furniture collection is handcrafted in Italy by specialized artisans\, resulting in heirloom designs lasting a lifetime. \nSchedule: \n\n5PM Prosecco & networking. Meet the architects.\n5:30PM Talk begins\n6:15PM Talk ends. Meet the architects\, and book signing.\n7pm Event ends.\n\nPhoto Credit: Joe Fletcher \n\n  \nAbout Woods + Dangaran: \nMany firms describe their work as “transformative”—architecture as an accomplished fact. At Woods + Dangaran\, the the Los Angeles-based firm creates modern homes through dialogue and exploration. By collaborating closely with its clients throughout the design process\, the architects are better able to inspire them with the finished product. By working closely with trusted tradespersons\, the firm can deliver work that is uncompromising in craftsmanship. \nWorking across the country\, Woods + Dangaran designs holistically and at every scale: from integrating architecture and interiors to creating custom furnishings. The result are projects that are subtle and disciplined\, pure in form\, and focused on realizing sublime experiences of space and light. Each building is a carefully curated journey through indoor and outdoor environments that are quietly luxurious\, elegantly fluid\, and warmly modern. \nAbout 33SIXTY: \n33SIXTY isn’t just a showroom—it’s a refined space where design meets soul. Since its 2014 debut by California entrepreneur Gregory Herman\, the company has quietly redefined modern luxury. First rooted in San Francisco with a Flexform flagship\, and expanding to Los Angeles\, it has become synonymous with Italian craftsmanship and restrained elegance. \nIn 2024\, the brand entered a striking new phase through a partnership with Boffi | de Padova\, marked by a new San Francisco showroom. With its curated mix of Italian furniture and cabinetry\, and Herman’s personal approach to client service\, 33SIXTY continues to attract the attention of design insiders. \nMore than a retail destination\, 33SIXTY fosters meaningful conversations in design. Its programming—ranging from intimate talks to panels with top creative professionals\, including architect Anne Fougeron\, architects Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner; architect Greg Faulkner; designers Gary Hutton\, and Paul Wiseman—has made it a cultural touchpoint for the West Coast design community. \n

SUMMARY:James Hurst: The Tension of Design Between the Familiar and the Unfamiliar
DESCRIPTION:Design has always been a tension between the familiar and the unfamiliar. \nToo normal? No one notices.\nToo weird? No one understands.\nThe sweet spot? That’s where culture shifts. \nI’ll be talking about the creative framework that’s shaped much of my work over the past two decades:\n   Weird the Normal — making the everyday feel strange\, delightful\, or uncanny.\n   Normal the Weird — taking complex or unconventional ideas and making them feel obvious. \nFrom rethinking global brand systems at Google to building playful weirdness into Tinder\, I’ve found that creative impact often comes down to how bravely — and precisely — we calibrate those two forces. \nIn this talk\, I’ll share:\n– Why our cultural definition of “normal” is eroding (and why that’s a good thing)\n– How to use AI not just to generate\, but to reframe\n– Real stories from the frontlines of brand reinvention\, product design\, and semiotic strategy\n– Tools to help your team design for emotional resonance\, not just efficiency \nIf you’re working at the intersection of creativity and technology — this is for you. \n\nCome find me at SF Design Week — I’ll be in conversation\, sharing new ideas\, and probably drawing some weird diagrams. \n  \nABOUT JAMES HURST: \nJames Hurst is a designer\, author\, Partner & Chief Creative Officer at Zag. \nHe has led creative teams at some of the world’s most influential tech companies — as Head of Brand Design at Google\, Global Creative Director at Pinterest\, and Creative Director at Tinder — where he helped shape product-led brand experiences at scale. James is the author of Use Design To Design Change\, a practical framework for building brands with purpose\, and teaches a course on AI and Aesthetic Intelligence\, equipping creatives with the tools to thrive in a new era of design. \nWork etc & Rogue School
