SUMMARY:James Hurst: The Tension of Design Between the Familiar and the Unfamiliar
DESCRIPTION:Design has always been a tension between the familiar and the unfamiliar. \nToo normal? No one notices.\nToo weird? No one understands.\nThe sweet spot? That’s where culture shifts. \nI’ll be talking about the creative framework that’s shaped much of my work over the past two decades:\n   Weird the Normal — making the everyday feel strange\, delightful\, or uncanny.\n   Normal the Weird — taking complex or unconventional ideas and making them feel obvious. \nFrom rethinking global brand systems at Google to building playful weirdness into Tinder\, I’ve found that creative impact often comes down to how bravely — and precisely — we calibrate those two forces. \nIn this talk\, I’ll share:\n– Why our cultural definition of “normal” is eroding (and why that’s a good thing)\n– How to use AI not just to generate\, but to reframe\n– Real stories from the frontlines of brand reinvention\, product design\, and semiotic strategy\n– Tools to help your team design for emotional resonance\, not just efficiency \nIf you’re working at the intersection of creativity and technology — this is for you. \n\nCome find me at SF Design Week — I’ll be in conversation\, sharing new ideas\, and probably drawing some weird diagrams. \n  \nABOUT JAMES HURST: \nJames Hurst is a designer\, author\, Partner & Chief Creative Officer at Zag. \nHe has led creative teams at some of the world’s most influential tech companies — as Head of Brand Design at Google\, Global Creative Director at Pinterest\, and Creative Director at Tinder — where he helped shape product-led brand experiences at scale. James is the author of Use Design To Design Change\, a practical framework for building brands with purpose\, and teaches a course on AI and Aesthetic Intelligence\, equipping creatives with the tools to thrive in a new era of design. \nWork etc & Rogue School

SUMMARY:Fashioning Reform: A Panel with Sonya Yu
DESCRIPTION:“What if” we reinvented fashion? “What if” that reinvention helped change the world? And “what if” every designer asked themselves “what if” to spark lasting change? \nThe innovative designers Ann Duskus\, Paolo Cui and Stella Harry Lee ask themselves this question to change how they approach and execute designs while creating a fashion forward model of sustainability via their chosen mediums: bespoke footwear for Ann through her consultancy Studio Duskus\, reworked vintage and sashiko mending workshops for Paolo through his brand Idle Worship\, and experimental fibers for Stella through her material design studio. \nIn conversation with Four One Nine founder Sonya Yu\, the three designers explore the idea of reform—and stagnancy—in the fashion industry\, manufacturing\, supply chain\, and personal creativity.

SUMMARY:Color as Catalyst: Design for Social Impact with Project Color Corps and Fuseproject
DESCRIPTION:Join moderator Dawn Zidonis for a Fireside Chat with Laura Guido-Clark\, Founder and CEO of Love Good Color and Project Color Corps and Yves Behar\, Founder and CEO of Fuseproject as they revisit their collaboration between Project Color Corps and fuseproject at the Willie Mays Boys & Girls Club in San Francisco’s Hunters Point. Through community-led workshops\, kids created a “Good Fun” color palette that transformed their space and reflected their voices. \nThis conversation will explore how color can shape perception\, mood\, and behavior—and how it continues to drive meaningful transformation\, creating equity\, joy and belonging in neighborhoods. \nSPEAKERS: \n\nABOUT LAURA-GUIDO CLARK: \nLaura Guido-Clark is an expert in the skin of consumer products – their color\, materials\, and finish.  \nThroughout her twenty-plus year career\, Laura has analyzed the conscious and unconscious influences that drive buying decisions. She has been dubbed an ‘Experience Consultant’ because of her ability to translate those influences into prescient forecasting and concrete applications of color and finish for new products.  \nIn 2017\, Laura launched her groundbreaking color methodology called LOVE GOOD COLOR. LOVE GOOD COLOR integrates science and the senses\, enabling designers to factor in emotive response when using color.  \nLaura has helped companies such as Herman Miller\, HP\, Samsung\, and Toyota use color and materials on their products that resonate with consumers and succeed in competitive markets. Her textile and pattern design includes work for HBF\, Pallas\, Carnegie\, and FLOR.  \nLaura’s expertise ranges from textiles to consumer products such as automotive\, electronics\, and major household appliances. \nIn 2011\, Laura founded Project Color Corps\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to painting urban neighborhoods with color and pattern that impart positive messages of joy\, equity and belonging. The organization is now flourishing in four cities across the country. \n  \n\nABOUT YVES BEHAR: \nYves Behar is the Founder and CEO of fuseproject\, a design and innovation studio based in San Francisco and Lisbon. He has launched over 100 early-stage ventures and developed products for brands such as Samsung\, Herman Miller\, and L’Oréal. His work is rooted in the belief that design accelerates the adoption of new ideas\, shaping products that transform how we live. \nBehar is known for creating iconic products like the SNOO smart sleeper\, Herman Miller Sayl chair\, and Samsung Frame TV. He has also led humanitarian projects such as a partnership with the non-profit The Ocean Cleanup\, and See Better to Learn Better\, which have improved millions of lives globally. \nA leader in AI and robotics\, Behar and Fuseproject designed Moxie\, an emotionally intelligent robot for children\, ElliQ\, an AI companion for the elderly\, and Maxio for AES – an AI-driven robot that installs solar panels in half the time at half the cost. His work is included in the collections of major museums\, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. \nBehar has received over 300 awards and has been named one of TIME Magazine’s Top 25 Visionaries. Forbes recognized him as the “Most Influential Industrial Designer in the World.” \n  \n\nMODERATOR: DAWN ZIDONIS\n \nCo-founder and CEO of Design Bay Area and San Francisco Design Week. Design Bay Area is the leading multi-disciplinary design\, arts and culture platform showcasing the innovation\, influence and reach of the products and brands in our region. \nDawn is also the co-founder of World Design Weeks\, a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting international design weeks\, sharing resources and content while fostering conversations and relationships between design cities. \nShe has served on the board of directors at The Center for Architecture and Design in San Francisco which produces Architecture and the City\, a month long celebration of Architecture and Design. SUMMARY:Analog Intelligence with Everett Katigbak / Anthropic
DESCRIPTION:Everett will explore the need for human craft and creativity in the age of AI. While artificial intelligence has made exponential strides\, the talk will discuss how the best AI future should augment and amplify human skills\, not replace them. As more AI companies emerge\, designing for AI brands doesn’t mean everything must be AI-generated\, but rather\, the design process can be more collaborative and efficient with clients\, teammates\, and AI assistants. \nEverett is the Creative Director at Anthropic\, and was previously the Executive Producer at Stripe where he helped build their publishing arm\, Stripe Press. He’s also a co-founder if the Analog Research Laboratory\, a print studio that integrated analog techniques into Facebook’s brand and company culture. \n\nThis event is hosted by DesignBayArea.
