SUMMARY:From Algae to Artifact: A Hands-On Biomaterial Workshop
DESCRIPTION:*** EVENT SOLD OUT***\nIf you’ve ever been curious about biomaterials or how to make your own sustainable objects\, this workshop is for you.\nTogether\, we’ll dive into the exciting world of algae-based bioplastics — materials made simply from agar\, glycerin\, and water — and explore how they can be transformed into beautiful\, functional pieces that go far beyond packaging and compost bags.\nWe’ll kick off with an info and demo session introducing you to the making process\, key characteristics\, and surprising design possibilities of these materials. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at our own experiments and creative process\, plus a brief introduction to the materials science behind algae-based bioplastics and foams. While we won’t be making the material from scratch (due to long drying times)\, you’ll receive the recipe to try at home.\nThen\, during a hands-on DIY session\, you’ll craft your own unique home decor — a hanging or standing organizer — using our library of algae-based materials. Along the way\, you’ll learn essential techniques like joinery\, creating custom patterning on biofoams\, and incorporating other biomaterials (feel free to bring wood\, fabrics\, threads\, or anything else you’d like to experiment with!)\nNo prior experience needed — just curiosity and a love for design! You’ll leave with a unique piece that reflects both creativity and environmental responsibility. \nSCHEDULE [2 hrs]\n10 mins: Welcome + Introductions\n25 mins: Deep dive into algae-bioplastics development\n15 mins: Demo + Intro to our biomaterial library\n60 mins: DIY your home decor + Open experimentation\n10 mins: Show and tell \nFor this workshop the cost per person is $30 which covers the cost of materials. The bioplastics and materials are hand poured\, specially for this workshop! \nWe will have signs out at the entrances of Jacobs Institute\, in order to guide attendees to the correct location within the building. \nParking is located at the Lower Hearst and Upper Hearst garages. There is also paid and free 2 hour street parking available nearby. \nORGANIZER BIOS:\nChia-Jung:\nIndustrial Designer | HCI Researcher
Focused on CMF (Color\, Material\, Finish) design\, accessible DIY making\, and advanced material research — thriving to create designs with minimum interference to both the user and the environment.\nDivya:\nDivya is a Materials Scientist and Designer with a focus on sustainable products. She has previous experience in polymer science and additive manufacturing industries\, and her work spans biodesign\, e-textiles\, and participatory design\, integrating technology with traditional making and environmental resilience.
