SUMMARY:When UX Meets ML/AI: Human-Centered Design in an Algorithmic World\, How UC Berkeley Extension is embracing AI and Tech
DESCRIPTION:Explore the intersection of UX design and AI/ML—how designers can and should shape the user experience around intelligent systems\, focusing on usability\, transparency\, trust\, and human agency.  \nIn an era where artificial intelligence is embedded in everything from search engines to smart assistants\, the role of user experience (UX) design is being radically redefined. This talk delves into the intersection of AI and UX\, examining how designers can create intuitive\, ethical\, and empowering digital experiences that work in harmony with machine intelligence. \nWe’ll discuss how designing for AI-driven systems is fundamentally different from traditional UX. AI systems are adaptive\, probabilistic\, and often opaque\, meaning users don’t always understand how decisions are made. This introduces new design challenges\, such as building trust\, ensuring transparency\, and providing effective feedback mechanisms. \nWe’ll explore: \n\nHow to apply UX principles like explainability and control in AI contexts\nCommon pitfalls and challenges\, such as data bias and over-automation\nDesign patterns that help users feel confident using AI\nReal-world case studies in productivity tools\, entertainment\, and high-stakes industries like healthcare and finance\n\nThe talk will conclude by looking ahead\, highlighting the emerging roles of UX designers in shaping the future of AI. As tools evolve and AI becomes a design collaborator\, UX professionals will need to learn new skills\, such as prompt engineering and behavior modeling. \nWhether you’re a designer\, product manager\, or tech enthusiast\, this talk will give you practical insights and inspiration to create human-centered AI experiences.\n \nHow UC Berkeley Extension is Embracing AI and Emerging Technology Courses\nUC Berkeley Extension is adapting its curriculum to meet the growing demand for AI and emerging tech skills by offering courses in areas such as machine learning\, data ethics\, and human-centered AI and Voice Design. These courses emphasize not only technical knowledge but also critical thinking and ethical design\, preparing students to lead in creating responsible\, people-first AI experiences across disciplines. \n  \nAbdalla Emam\nUX Design and Research Instructor @ UC Berkeley Extension\nCo-Founder of Indy Pixels Venture Studio\nAuthor of the Design Container book and framework \nAbdalla Emam is an accomplished product designer\, UX professional\, and creative entrepreneur\, renowned for his extensive expertise in SaaS product design. He has contributed to projects for industry giants such as Google\, Apple\, Atlassian\, Equinix\, and QlikTech. With a focus on user-centered design\, data-driven design\, and machine learning and AI product development\, Abdalla Emam possesses a wealth of experience in these domains. Additionally\, he is a distinguished startup founder\, an educator in UX design at UC Berkeley Extension\, and an author of the Design Container book and framework. Abdalla founded Indy Pixels\, a venture studio and product design company that supports founders in building SaaS and Enterprise tools. Abdalla earned his bachelor’s degree in digital communication and media with a concentration in web and mobile devices from New York University. He also earned his master’s in business\, design\, and technology integration from the University of Southern California.
